Project Introduction

This project’s objective is to create a series of three marketing materials that visually introduce my event art farts! By using various colors, typography, and hierarchy I can create a poster, Facebook banner, and an Instagram Ad.

Illustrator Exercise:
Oct 20, 2020

This was a short illustrator exercise to practice using the pen tool and pathfinder tool.

I created a sketch and tested out various bubble fonts that I thought fit well with my event. I chose some colors that I thought would pop out.

Feedback Session with Ji

During the 1:1 feedback session, I realized I need to create more of a hierarchy between all my content for the audience to read. I need to change the orientation of my poster and create more digital sketches before moving into fonts and color. I can test out the placements through illustrator and also include moodboards to make a clearer image of my event poster.

Moodboard from Pinterest

This is a moodboard of some poster examples I collected from Pinterest. It made me think about my composition and theme for my posters moving forward.

Digital Sketches

Moving onto digital iterations, I created a couple different compositions to see what best fit the vibe of the poster theme I was going for. I chose the third board because the floaty, airy vibe of art farts seemed cloud-like and most representative for my event. I also like the composition of the information on the third poster or the fourth poster the best.

Poster Iterations

Using https://color.adobe.com/create/color-wheel, I came up with a set of colors to match the theme of my “Art Farts” event poster. I chose bubble letter typefaces to create a more fun look since it is family friendly and I also thought the font matched the title very well. The artist featured in my event is one of my favorite photographers, Kanghee Kim, who will be the speaker at the event.

Group Feedback

On the google sheets form and miro feedback session, I collectively made some edits for my poster, banner, and ad moving forward. I realized that only 3 colors instead of 4 were supposed to be used. The warping of my headlines are difficult to read and I should adjust the alignment of the paragraph as well. Overall, the feedback I received was that the theme of my event was cohesive with my poster design but with technicalities, I should adjust some things to make it more finalized.

Updated Poster, Banner, and Ad

Poster, Ad, & Banner

For these iterations of the Instagram Ad, Facebook Banner, and the Poster, I limited my colors to 3, included 2 fonts — Bubble Gums and Bubblebobble, and created fun abstract shapes using the pen tool. I arranged the composition in various ways because every poster series has different dimensions where the information needs to be switched around for it to fit.

1:1 Feedback with Anna

This feedback session with Anna made me realize that I can make arrangements to align some content more carefully. I should also play around with the yellow shapes to test out different colors and fill in the text bubbles with white so that it is easier to read. Also, I should move around the address location under date and time so that it is easily accessible to the audience.
For the Facebook banner, I can remove the information on the poster and update it on the Facebook page — under description. Overall, I should pay attention the spacing in my paragraphs and time information, boarder alignments, and color scheme to make this event look more cohesive.

Instagram Ad

Poster

For these iterations, I changed my colors from yellow to orange. I focused on creating better alignments on the edges of my text and moved around the address location under the date and time to make it more easily accessible together. After finishing my poster, ad, and banner I updated it on an Instagram and Facebook template in photoshop.

Final Critique Feedback

Some iterations I made with the feedback I received was focusing on legibility. I lessened the use of warping my texts and focused on alignment with the paragraph so that there is no open gaps.

Final Iterations
Nov 16, 2020

For this project, I decided to go with the event “art farts!” because I love looking at different artworks and getting inspired. I also hope that making my own art inspires others too! So this event is family friendly, where everyone can make art, buy art, and sell art! Artists and non-artists are welcome for $5. There is food and music included in the ticket fee.
The speaker at the event is one of my favorite artists, Kanghee Kim. She is a New York based photographer who makes surreal landscape images in pastel colors. I wanted to make a fun and inviting poster illustration with abstract shapes and vibrant colors. I tried warping some text with this bubbly font that I found online as well.

The final iterations I had done were changing up some alignments, transitioning information locations, and fixing some composition overall. After completing the poster, ad, and banner, I included the final forms in the templates above to see what they would look like in the digital setting.

Reflection
I realized that the smallest details of information really makes a big difference in the audiences view. There are so many things within a poster that we need to have “perfect” so that the viewers are satisfied with what they are looking at. Overall, I had a really challenging experience with this project but rewarding. I think this was a step into understanding the “rules” of design versus fine arts and I hope the moving along, I can remember these tips and process for better improvement in future works.
